History of MCW (Medical College of Wisconsin)

The late 19th and early 20th centuries were turbulent years for American society. At that time, everything was just beginning for this nation. The Medical College of Wisconsin is a living witness to these social upheavals. From World War I to the economic crisis of 1929, then World War II, and finally the period of the Vietnam War. The history of MCW starts from 1893 to the present like a magical picture. From a small office to a beacon, a flagship in medical education.

In the early years of its establishment, MCW was announced under the name Wisconsin College of Physicians and Surgeons, implying a place for training surgeons. In 1950, facing many financial difficulties, local philanthropist Kurtis Froedtert decided to establish a teaching hospital, which today has become Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital. Froedtert Hospital is adjacent to MCW and is one of the three major affiliated healthcare centers where MCW students, residents, and doctors practice.

However, on September 30, 1967, Marquette University ended its relationship with MCW due to financial difficulties, and once again MCW continued to become a private school. After many changes in scale and model, in 1970 the school officially became known as the Medical College of Wisconsin. Each passing year, the generations of doctors and nurses trained by MCW will continue to support the American healthcare industry, and that is also our wish.
